Women Lawyers Forum – Vancouver

Speed Coaching: Calling on Juniors Who Wish to Survive and Thrive in the Real Law World

Let’s face it- being a junior lawyer is tough! There are a lot of survival skills you were not taught at the law school, such as how to market yourself inside and outside your firm; how to negotiate your salary, or how to deal with difficult or high conflict opposing counsel.

Come join us in our “Speed Coaching” event to learn tips that will help you keep your head above the water in the “real law world”. This event will involve 4 roundtables with the following mentors/coaches at each table who will share their hard-earned experiences on the following issues:

  1. Lindsey Petherick will discuss salary negotiation at the 1st table. Lindsey is founder of Edge Legal Recruitment, which places lawyers in Vancouver and Calgary. Lindsey founded Edge in April 2018 after successfully working at Canada’s largest legal recruitment agency for 12 years.
  2. Elisabeth A. Sadowski will discuss external marketing at the 2nd table. Elisabeth practices personal injury and employment law at Richards Buell Sutton LLP. Elizabeth has mentored young lawyer, encouraging them to diversify outside their main practice areas and to get more involved in the community. In 2019, Elisabeth’s article “It’s Never Too Early to Start Giving Back” was published in B.C’s legal journal, the Advocate.
  3. Heather L. Jones will discuss internal marketing at the 3rd table. Heather is a partner at Miller Thomson and has extensive practical experience in a broad range of litigation with a focus on complex corporate/commercial matters. Heather regularly mentors young lawyers through programs such as the Women’s Legal Forum and others. She has co-chaired the Vancouver General Hospital Gala, been vice-chair of the Goldie Hawn Foundation and assists local small businesses after successfully starting and running one herself.
  4. Kelly E. Slade-Kerr will discuss dealing with difficult or high-conflict counsel at  the 4th table. Kelly is the managing partner of the HHBG Lawyers’ Surrey office. She practices employment law, focusing on solving workplace problems. As a working mother, Kelly has developed a particular interest in assisting women who face difficulties in the workplace after choosing to have children. Kelly has served as a trustee of the New Westminster School Board from 2014 until 2018.

During the event, you will have a chance to circulate after a certain amount of time and ask different mentors questions about various topics.
